On July 23, 2018, the Xe Pian – Xe Namnoy hydropower dam in the Lao southeast province of Attapeu collapsed and released more than 500 million cubic meters, causing catastrophic flash floods in the downstream areas. According to the Lao News Agency, at least six villages in the San Sai district were submerged, claiming several human lives and leaving hundreds of people missing and 6,600 people homeless.
